When the USS Genesis encounters an ancient quantum engine buried within an unexplored region of space, an attempt to study the mysterious device triggers a catastrophic surge, tearing open a rift between realities.
Commander Vero, Reruk, Vireya and Doctor Syvar are pulled through.
Stranded in a brutal parallel universe, they soon discover something impossible: there are no alternate versions of them. Their quantum signatures have no counterbalance in this reality. They are unique anomalies—people who simply do not exist in this universe.
Yet others have taken the paths they might have walked.
A humble schoolteacher from the Prime Universe finds herself face-to-face with the Mirror Empire's ruthless Empress. Her brother serves as the Empress's formidable personal bodyguard, while Captain Steyn discovers a terrifying counterpart to his own expertise in the form of the Empire's feared Inquisitor, master of interrogation and torture.
But there is little time to contemplate the differences between the two realities.
The quantum engine that sustains the rift is failing.
With every passing hour, the connection to their universe becomes weaker. Once the engine collapses, the four stranded officers will be permanently trapped in a reality that was never meant to contain them.
As Vero, Reruk, Vireya and Syvar race across a hostile universe in search of a way home, they must navigate Imperial politics, survive those who would exploit their unique quantum nature, and convince those who control the ancient engine to help them.
Meanwhile, aboard the Genesis, the crew desperately searches for a way to reopen the dying rift before it is too late.
Two universes.
Four people who belong to only one of them.
And a rapidly closing doorway between realities.
To get home, they must find the one thing their universe cannot provide: a counterpart to themselves.
Two paths. One soul. One choice. |
